Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about benefits, professional growth, and career advancement at Second Chance
The Workforce Fellowship is an internal Second Chance program providing tuition support and loan repayment funded by organizational and donor resources. HRSA programs (NHSC, NURSE Corps) are federal programs with separate application processes. You can participate in both simultaneously — many of our clinicians combine HRSA federal benefits with our internal fellowship to maximize total loan repayment support.
No. We hire both students/interns and fully licensed professionals. If you’re already licensed and not in school, you’re still eligible for loan repayment benefits and all other employment benefits. The tuition support component of the fellowship is specifically for those currently enrolled in degree programs.
Fellowship awards are competitive and subject to available funding. Priority is given to employees demonstrating strong performance, commitment to community health, and alignment with our mission. The review committee evaluates applications holistically — not just GPA, but also your clinical skills, cultural competence, and dedication to serving underserved populations. Most employees who apply with supervisor endorsement and satisfactory performance receive some level of fellowship support.
Fellowship benefits are contingent on continued employment. If you voluntarily leave before completing your commitment period, future disbursements will cease, but you are not required to repay funds already received (this is not a loan). We understand that life circumstances change — if you need to leave for legitimate reasons (family emergency, health issues, etc.), we work with you individually to find solutions.
Supervision is fully included as part of your W2 employment — there is no additional charge to you. This is a significant financial benefit, as private supervision typically costs $100-150 per session. We provide weekly individual supervision, group supervision, and interdisciplinary case consultation at no cost because we believe structured mentorship is essential to clinical excellence.
Fellowship participation requires full-time employment status (minimum 32 hours per week). However, we do offer some benefits to part-time employees (20-31 hours/week) on a prorated basis, including health insurance and PTO. Part-time employees are not eligible for tuition support or loan repayment through the fellowship program.
Career progression varies by discipline and individual development, but typical timelines are: Intern (1-2 years during training) → Associate Clinician (2-3 years post-graduation accumulating licensure hours) → Licensed Professional (independent practice) → Program Leadership (5-7+ years total experience). We prioritize internal promotions and actively develop emerging leaders through mentorship, project leadership opportunities, and structured leadership training.
